Widely distributed in South Africa, Steenbok prefers the open veldt with adequate shelter in the form of shrubs or patches of tall grass.  They live alone, only meeting to mate and then they part.  The dainty little fawns are sometimes hidden in abandoned ant bear holes in the ground.  When threatened, the adult steenbok hides in dense cover, or dashes away with lightning speed, easily outdistancing most carnivores.
